Matsumoto, Japan

In the quiet onsen town of Asama, on the edge of Matsumoto and the Japanese Alps, Matsumoto Jujo Hotel is the rebirth of an inn founded in 1686, reimagined as a retreat where concrete and wood, old and new, exist in quiet balance.

What stayed with me was the completeness of the experience: a private onsen on the balcony facing the mountains, a library designed as a space to slow down, a dinner built entirely around local produce and regional wine. Nothing here is decorative, every element serves the same intention: rest, depth, connection to the place.

This is hospitality as area revitalisation: when a hotel doesn't just welcome you to a place, but brings the place itself back to life.
